The Fisher 800-B is a very unique receiver from the 1960's Fisher lineup.

It was a transitional piece that was designed during the rise of FM Multiplex Stereo broadcasting.

PLUS independent AM and FM tuners - each with their own "Magic Eye" signal strength indicators - along with a symmetrical control layout make it one of the most aesthetically pleasing Fisher receivers available.

This example underwent a full electronic and cosmetic restoration from our good friends and experts at Novalux Stereophonic.

A detailed video showing the receiver history and restoration can be viewed here:

Restoration Notes:
• Aging multi-section filter capacitors replaced with custom made modern reproductions.
• Full power supply rebuild featuring NOS carbon composition resistors.
• Bias supply rebuild - Selenium bridge rectifier replaced with a Silicon equivalent for long term reliability.
• Compensating resistor added to maintain the original filament voltage for the line and phono stage tubes.
• IBAM (Individual Bias Adjustment Modification) board installed along with 10 ohm 1/4W sense resistors for easy individual output tube bias adjustments.
• Screen resistors added to allow the use of current production 7591 variants.
• All axial electrolytic capacitors were replaced.
• AM and FM tuners aligned to service manual spec.
• Bench tested to approx. 25W per channel into 8 ohms, both channels driven.

Tube Notes:
• Line Stage - NOS Raytheon 12AX7
• Phono Stage - JJ 12AX7
• Phase Inverter - Long Smooth Plate Telefunken 12AX7
• Outputs - Current production Tung Sol 7591 Matched Quad

Cosmetic Notes:
• The faceplate of this unit has minor cosmetic blemishes (See Images)
• Some of the dial lettering is no longer complete (Specifically 55 on the AM Band)
• The wood case was sourced from a Fisher 400 and was repaired and refinished in Danish oil. The case also has minor cosmetic blemishes throughout.
• All knob brights are reproduction brass equivalents.

The SkyFi Testing Process for Receivers:
We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure there are no signs of stress or aging. Capacitors are checked for telltale sings of bulging or leaking, resistors are checked for signs of overheating or cracking, and transistors are checked for signs of stress or damage.

We then power up the unit carefully and run a simple 1k sine wave while monitoring the output on an oscilloscope for signs of distortion or noise. We run the receiver to its full rated power into the appropriate resistive load provided by our Sencore amplifier tester. If there is an issue, it will usually be noticeable at this point. If everything reads clean, we will often test for THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) measured by our Keithley distortion meter, and compare it against the original manufacturers specifications. The receiver then remains powered on to "burn in" on our test bench for a few hours to make sure there are no heat related issues. If there are balanced inputs available they will be also be tested.

Then the tuner is thoroughly tested in our lab utilizing our professional Sencore SG80 FM Generator, which allows us to generate a reference FM signal of any frequency and amplitude, and then measure the resulting tuner output on our Sencore PR81 or oscilloscope.

Final testing involves pushing actual music thorough the receiver. We've learned over time that some issues are only noticeable to a trained ear while listening to familiar source material. Our test bench has reference vintage KEF speakers that we're very familiar with which quickly reveal any discrepancies. Some receivers will then move into our listening room where they are tested with our in-house reference speakers of choice.
