CATRIDGES:
If you are unsure, the Sumiko Starling is the go to cartridge. It features a boron cantilever and tracks like a dream when properly calibrated on our test bench. Most of the SL-1200Gs leave here with this cartridge. The Han Umami Blue is a step above and is very similar but add a fancier body. A solid budget choice would be a Sumiko Songbird.
You can also pick one from the rest of our Sumiko or Hana Collections.
If you want the latest technology the DS Audio line of optical cartridges are next level good. They include a phono preamp so if your rig doesn't have one this is a great advantage.
CALIBRATION:
There are two cartridge mounting options to select from:
1. "Basic Mounting and Instructions = $0". For those that either don't want a cartridge or just want basic installation. We'll install the cartridge on the headshell, make basic adjustments to the combo, and provide instructions to easily complete the process in your home. This can be one of our cartridges or one supplied by you.
2. "12 Step Premium Installation = $390". A highly detailed and refined process performed in our specialized jig, taking 12 steps to precisely calibrate the cartridge which is purchased from us or supplied by you.
Click here for more info on our calibration process.
CABLES:
The phono cable in particular is the most important in the entire system. You see, cartridges put out minuscule signals which need to be amplified hundreds of times. What ever noise is picked up by the cable is in term amplified hundreds of times. Proper construction, material quality, grounding and connectors are critical in getting the best results. The stock cable is good enough to get you started but at some point you are going to want to invest in a good cable. The Kimber we selected gets the job done nicely for not much money. It features gold plated locking WBT connectors which are as good as they come. We chose a copper version but they are also available in hybrid and pure silver here.
The power cord is not creditical at all but if you like nice things (as I do) the model we offer from Kimber is beautiful made and reasonably priced.
ACCESSORIES:
We offer several accessories to go with this model, some developed and manufactured by us.
This bundle covers them all but they are also available individually. If you purchase the Little F'wed lifter or KAB fluid damper we will install it for you.
Description:
Turntable with a Hi-Fi design featuring ΔΣ-Drive, a new motor drive technology that delivers high rotational accuracy and low vibration. The turntable’s new motor, three-layer platter, and high-rigidity chassis ensure even higher sound quality.
• Coreless direct drive motor achieving stable rotation
• ΔΣ-Drive suppresses vibrations from the motor for smoother, more accurate rotation
• Anti-vibration structure with a three-layer platter and a two-layer chassis
• Low-noise, low-voltage power circuit and a switching power supply
• Tonearm achieving high Initial-motion sensitivity
• High-rigidity body and high-damping silicon insulators for smooth sound and isolation from various vibrations
Features:
Coreless Direct Drive Motor Achieving Stable Rotation
In the SL-1300G, the use of a coreless direct-drive motor with no iron core eliminates uneven rotation of the turntable known as cogging. Also, the twin-rotor construction reduces the bearing load while maintaining high torque, and reduces minute vibrations during rotation.
Furthermore, the SL 1300G’s motor was redesigned to eliminate subtle vibrations that could affect sound quality. To improve rigidity, the same reinforcement pattern as the Reference Class SL-1000R/SP 10R was used for the coil mounting base.
Motor-Drive System, ΔΣ Drive (Delta Sigma Drive)
Unlock a realm of audio precision with the ΔΣ-Drive – a state-of-the-art system harnessing Technics’ expertise in PWM signal processing. In addition to reducing harmonics, the drive suppresses vibrations from the motor for smoother, more accurate rotation, ensuring a rich reproduction of the music.
THREE-LAYERED TURNTABLE PLATTER
The turntable has a three-layered construction with a rigidly combined brass and aluminium die-cast platter. With a deadening rubber covering its entire rear surface to eliminate unnecessary resonance, thereby achieving high rigidity and vibration damping. This delivers smooth rotational stability and inertial mass surpassing the SP-10MK2, the direct-drive turntable standard used by broadcast stations worldwide, as well as having more than twice the inertial mass of the SL-1200MK5.
TWO-LAYERED CABINET CONSTRUCTION
The SL-1300G ensures high rigidity by using a body with a two-layered construction that solidly unifies the BMC and the aluminum die-cast chassis. Reinforcing ribs have been added between the motor/tone arm on the top panel. This improves rigidity and vibration damping characteristics
HIGH-LEVEL BALANCE ADJUSTMENT
When the weight distribution of the turntable is uneven, excess vibration or noise occurs during rotation, which causes degradation in sound quality. Therefore, the balance of the turntable is adjusted at the factory by using specialized high-precision balance adjustment equipment for each and every item after the turntable is assembled. Turntables that have undergone adjustment are labelled with a sticker reading “BALANCED” to indicate that adjustment has been done.
LOW-NOISE SWITCHING CIRCUIT
Use of a high-speed switching power supply ensures a stable supply capacity and less ripple and humming. Applying a switching power supply to a turntable eliminates the need for a large transformer and countermeasures for the ensuing mechanical vibrations. A switching frequency of above 100 kHz limits the impact of noise on the music playback bandwidth.
CURRENT INJECTION ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING
This technology combines a noise detection device with an error amplifier. It detects residual noise in the power supply and applies an inverse phase current to remove noise components. It removes low frequency noise more effectively than a regulator to ensure a more ideal power supply.
Tonearm Achieving High Initial Motion Sensitivity
The tonearm, a crucial component for precise reading, tracks the record's rotation. Inherited from Technics, it employs a lightweight, rigid aluminum pipe in the traditional static-balance universal S-shape. Featuring a gimbal suspension and high-precision bearing, it achieves high initial-motion sensitivity through manual assembly by skilled Japanese artisans.
This meticulous construction ensures accurate tracing of record grooves. Plus, it includes an auxiliary weight, providing flexibility for a variety of pickup cartridges
HIGH-DAMPING SILICON INSULATORS
For the insulators supporting the body, the SL-1300G uses special silicon rubber that ensures high vibration damping characteristics and long-term reliability.
HIGH-QUALITY TERMINALS
The turntable uses gold-plated phono terminals for detachable cables, while metal shielding construction inside the case reduces the effects of external noise.
Eco-friendly Cushioning/Packaging Materials
The SL-1300G adopts eco friendly packaging materials to help curtail marine plastics and other environmental problems. The cushioning has been changed from styrene foam to corrugated cardboard, reducing the amount of plastic used by around 70% compared to existing product packaging. We have also taken steps to improve convenience by combining accessories into one box while maintaining the strength of the cushioning to protect against the product’s heavy weight.
Recommended Cables and Accessories
While this turntable comes with a basic cable to get you started, this is the upgrade we recommend. With phono cables try and keep length to a shorter size as they tend to pickup noise on longer lengths - especially with MC cartridges.
The German-made WBT connectors are worth the extra $ but be sure to read in the manual how to tighten and loosen them properly.
With regard to the ground cable, yes one is included but we'll make you a custom ground length cable if you order a longer set of cables.
Kimber Kable - RCA Interconnects
For a power cord this model from Kimber is a great fit. Choose whatever length works comfortably.
If your equipment cannot accept a MC (Moving-Coil) cartridge but you'd like one vs MM (Moving-Magnet), we recommend this tube powered phono preamp as a stellar match. Available in silver or black to match your Technics.
