General:

Enjoy hours of immersive listening with the McIntosh MCD600 SACD/CD Player. At its core is a newly designed digital audio circuit featuring a premium 8-channel, 32-bit PCM/DSD digital-to-analog converter (DAC). Operating in Quad Balanced mode, four DAC channels are dedicated to each left and right audio channel, delivering exceptional resolution, accuracy, and musical realism. All PCM signals are upsampled to 32-bit/384kHz for enhanced sonic performance.

In addition to commercial SACDs and CDs, the MCD600 plays music from user-generated CD and DVD data discs, as well as USB flash drives via the convenient front-panel USB input. Supported formats include AAC, AIFF, ALAC, DSD (up to DSD128), FLAC, MP3, WAV (up to 24-bit/192kHz), and WMA, offering extensive playback flexibility.

“The sound of the MCD600 charms you right from the start: first with the quality of the bass, then with its three-dimensionality and stereo imaging, and finally with its midrange tones. Together, all these traits deliver outstanding, irresistible musicality.”
Winner of the 2020 SACD/CD Player Product of the Year Award – Hi-Fi i Muzyka

The MCD600 provides both fixed and variable balanced and unbalanced outputs. With its built-in volume control, the variable outputs allow the player to be connected directly to a power amplifier, eliminating the need for a separate preamplifier. Coaxial and optical digital outputs are included for use with an external DAC, while coaxial and optical digital inputs allow other digital sources to take advantage of the MCD600’s internal DAC. For private listening, the High Drive headphone amplifier delivers increased gain and output power and is optimized for virtually all headphone types.

“Worthy of its pedigree, offering solid construction and excellent, detailed sound.”
Winner of the 2019 Thumbs Up Award – Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity

A twin-laser optical pickup ensures optimal playback of SACD, CD, CD-R/RW, and DVD-R discs. The precision disc transport features a die-cast aluminum tray for smooth, quiet operation, while an advanced digital servo provides fast and accurate disc handling. Audio data is read at twice the normal rate, improving tracking and error correction. Power Control and data ports allow seamless integration with other McIntosh components.

“The sonic result was quite, quite beautiful. The music flowed soft, smooth and clear with a rich and resonant tone.”
The Audiophile Man

Visually, the MCD600 embodies classic McIntosh design, featuring a polished stainless steel chassis, black glass front panel, illuminated logo and controls, and aluminum end caps. New direct LED backlighting enhances the front panel’s appearance, while the top glass panel is screen-printed with performance specifications and a detailed block diagram. Testing Process:
We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure that there are no signs of heat stress or damage. Capacitors are checked for telltale signs of predictive failure including bulging, shrunken wrappers, or physical leakage. We also inspect resistors and other passive components for signs of overheating. When the unit is first powered on we check the drawer mechanism function.

After the visual inspection we connect the CD Player RCA outputs to our Sencore PA81 Power Analyzer which simulates a real world input impedance and allows us to monitor the output on an oscilloscope. We start with a test CD with precision test signals to verify proper output on both channels. If the CD player has balanced outputs these are also tested at this time.

If this check passes, we move onto evaluation with actual music CDs. We listen for clicks, skips, and drops during playback. At this time we also check the transport functions including Play, Pause, Stop, Repeat Track, Next Track, Previous Track, Fast Forward, Rewind, and programming if applicable. If the unit has a remote control, all remote control functions are verified.

If the CD player is capable of SACD playback we test its ability to read SACD layers on multiple discs including standard and hybrid SACD's. At this time we also check the unit’s digital outputs where applicable. If SACD layers are being properly read we should see the digital outputs mute during playback. On redbook CD playback we verify that each digital output maintains proper lock on our bench DAC.

After bench testing is completed, CD players are set up for testing on our long term test rig. During extended testing we make sure that unit can play through several different discs from beginning to end with no skips or lockups.
