A few years ago I spent a full year with a set of EgglestonWorks Andra II's which are very similar in design and construction.

I was so impressed I had a hard time letting them go!

I was hoping these Altars would be similar in capabilities and voices and I was not disappointed.

They sounded exactly like I remember the Andras, but in just a slightly smaller package. They appear to use very similar drivers and cabinet design so I'm not surprised.

I must warn you upfront that these are the heaviest speakers we've seen in this size. Might have something to do with the fact they chose granite to dampen the sides of the cabinet :-). 

There are two areas we've found these speakers to shine. First is the bass... wow, how can a box this size produce such thunderous and tight bass, especially in a sealed cabinet. You would never know it by looking, but there are two 12" woofers in each cabinet. The second woofer is setup in an isobaric configuration, which is a fancy way of saying it's in a sealed cabinet just behind the visible woofer. This doubles the driver area, while maintaining the same front cabinet size, as it would take a much much larger cabinet to accommodate two 12" woofers. 

Second, the midrange is as silky smooth as we have ever heard. Must have something to do with the double magnet 6" midrange drivers, again in an unusual configuration. 

These speakers were restored to perfect working condition. We took out all 4 woofers and sent the out to our friends at Millersound for professional inspection and re-foaming. They reported upon returning the woofers that they did a "museum quality" rebuild on the woofers which we confirmed; they are as good as new.

Cosmetics are good with only slight signs of use. Included with your purchase is a full set of very high quality adjustable spikes for both speakers.

The SkyFi Testing Process for Speakers:

Our speaker evaluation process starts with a visual inspection of all drivers. We are looking for damaged or deteriorating woofer surrounds, dented tweeter domes, and cone damage. We also inspect the speaker connection points for loose or broken connectors.

After the initial visual inspection we connect the speakers to a reference amplifier with our preferred test tracks. With the speakers placed with proper distance we listen to each driver to make sure that they are producing the intended frequencies with no signs of distortion or rattle. During listening tests with test tracks we check for proper stereo imaging and bass response at various listening levels. If there are any audible signs of issues, the speakers are taken to the bench where we perform a frequency sweep to isolate the issue so that it can be resolved by component repair or replacement.
