General:
The Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital is one of our favorite DACs at this price point. It can also be used as a preamp/headphone amplifier, which is extremely useful for a desktop setup. It was designed by the renowned John Westlake, who was also behind several products from Quad and Cambridge Audio.
Some of the best features of this unit are its OLED display, full-metal construction, dual-mono ESS Sabre 9038Q2M DAC chips, remote functionality (included). There are also several customizable DAC filter settings, allowing you to tailor the sound to your liking. When using the USB input, both MQA and DSD are supported as well.
There is very little on the market comparable to this unit. Made in Europe!
Best of all, this particular Pre Box S2 Digital is brand new and has never been used. It will, of course, include everything originally supplied from the factory and shows absolutely no signs of wear.
Please note this S2 Digital is the previous version of the current S2 Edition 23 which currently sells for $500.
From Pro-Ject:
This little desktop DAC is capable of high resolution audio up to 32bit 768kHz PCM and DSD512! Pre Box S2 Digital is also supports hardware MQA unfolding.
With organic polymer capacitors and thin film miniMELF resistors we were able to create a tiny device that will blow away even much bigger components for a much higher price.

Testing Process:
We start with a test signal to verify signal lock and proper output on both channels. If the DAC has balanced outputs these are also tested at this time. If the DAC has multiple Optical and Coaxial inputs they are all checked for proper lock. USB inputs are tested with a MacBook Pro.
After proper function is verified, we setup the DAC for a listening test to evaluate general audio reproduction quality and monitor for clicks, pops, or any other audible signs of issues related to dropped signal lock or failing audio output stages. We often connect the DAC under evaluation to our long term test rig for a long test stint to verify stability under real world operating conditions.
