General:
The McIntosh PC-1 is a heavy-duty 14-outlet sequential power controller from the 1990s, designed to help manage power distribution throughout a complete McIntosh audio or home theater system.
While it might look like an oversized power strip at first glance, there's actually quite a bit more going on here.
Originally designed to work with the McIntosh CR-10 Remote Control System and CR-12 Audio/Video Multizone System, the PC-1 allows connected amplifiers and source components to be powered on and off automatically through the main control system.
Even more interesting is its ability to power up connected amplifiers sequentially, with approximately a quarter-second delay between outlets. This helps prevent a large power surge when multiple amplifiers are switched on simultaneously.
The 14 outlets are divided as follows:
-
4 Power Amplifier Outlets: Individually switched according to the four listening zones, with sequential power-up
-
5 Audio Component Outlets: Switched together when an audio program is selected or a listening zone is activated
-
2 Video Component Outlets: Activated when video is selected
-
3 Unswitched Outlets: Remain powered whenever the PC-1 is plugged into an active AC outlet
The PC-1 also features built-in McIntosh surge protection, RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) filtering, and DC relays for quiet, reliable operation.
McIntosh System Compatibility:
According to the original McIntosh documentation, the PC-1 was designed for use with the following control systems:
-
McIntosh CR-10 Remote Control System
-
McIntosh CR-12 Audio/Video Multizone System
The rear-panel Power Control Out DIN connection also allows control to be extended to a second PC-1 or compatible McIntosh MC7104 and MC7108 power amplifiers.
We love coming across these interesting McIntosh accessories from the 1990s. They really show how much thought went into designing complete, integrated audio systems back in the day.
Important Compatibility Note:
The PC-1 is not a conventional standalone switched power strip. While its three unswitched outlets provide power whenever the unit is plugged in, the remaining eleven outlets require a compatible control system to operate as originally intended.
The original McIntosh documentation also specifies a maximum combined power consumption of 1,440 watts across all 14 outlets.
Please keep these requirements in mind when planning your system.
Also included is a reprinted copy of the original McIntosh PC-1 owner's manual, which has become quite difficult to find. It's also linked further down in this description for download.
