Just about the best power to size ratio amplifier package we have listed currently. Plush excellent design and build quality that's meant to last.

The LK140 and music

The LK140 is a rugged high output amplifies designed for ease of use and purity of sound.

You can build exactly the system you want, using one or more LK140 amplifiers. The LK140 gives 140W per channel into 4Ω, or 95W per channel into 8Ω.

The LK140 comes in a durable compact case built to last, and easy to stack on other Linn products. The amplifier has been designed to power up automatically when it detects the presence of an audio signal and power down into standby mode when there is no signal. This enables it to be left on with minimum power consumption. An indicator light on the front panel remains red when the amplifier is in standby and green when it is powered up, telling you at a glance the operational status of the amplifier.

The LK140 comes with full protection against power overload and overheating, automatically shutting down to prevent damage to itself or other Linn equipment, and powering back up when it is safe to do so.

The LK140 is direct-coupled and servo-controlled to produce the clearest sound and the toroidal transformer is fully shielded to prevent hum when the amplifier is stacked with other products.

The LK140 provides two input sockets to make it easy to daisy chain multi-amplifier systems, allowing you to boost the output power of your system, or take advantage or bi-amping and tri-amping.

Loudspeakers can be bi-wired to the LK140 by the use of the two loudspeaker sockets to obtain even higher sound quality. Bi-wiring involves making separate connections to the treble and midrange/bass units on a loudspeaker. Keeping the treble and midrange/bass signals separate improves the performance of the loudspeakers by reducing the coupling between the signals.

For more performance, you can use two or three LK140s to bi-amp or tri-amp to the loudspeakers, each amplifier driving the bass, midrange, and treble signals separately.

When bi-amping or tri-amping the highest possible performance can be obtained by removing the passive crossover units from the loudspeaker and fitting active crossover modules to the LK140 to accurately divide the signal into the appropriate frequency bands. This is known as active playback.

The LK140 is designed to be easy to convert to active playback. A complete range of stereo active crossover modules is available for all current Linn loudspeakers. Your retailer can fit these and make the necessary changes to your loudspeakers to transform your system to fully active.

The SkyFi Testing Process for Solid State Amplifiers:

We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure there are no signs of stress or aging. Capacitors are checked for telltale sings of bulging or leaking, resistors are checked for signs of overheating or cracking, and transistors are checked for signs of stress or damage.

We then power up the unit carefully and run a simple 1k sine wave while monitoring the output on an oscilloscope for signs of distortion or noise. Finally, we run the amplifier to its full rated power into the appropriate resistive load provided by our Sencore amplifier tester. If there is an issue, it will usually be noticeable at this point. If everything reads clean, we will often test for THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) measured by our Keithley distortion meter, and compare it against the original manufacturers specifications. The amplifier then remains powered on to "burn in" on our test bench for a few hours to make sure there are no heat related issues. If there are balanced inputs available they will be also be tested.

Final testing involves pushing actual music thorough the amplifier. We've learned over time that some issues are only noticeable to a trained ear while listening to familiar source material. Our test bench has reference vintage KEF speakers that we're very familiar with which quickly reveal any discrepancies. Some amplifiers will then move into our listening room where they are tested with our in-house reference speakers of choice.
