Award winning Andra II speakers from Tennessee maker EgglestonWorks.
This is the second generation retailing at $18,900 new.
These Andra II speakers were originally Andra I speakers and were upgraded to Andra II specifications by EgglestonWorks under the prior owner's care. This is why the granite side panels in this listing appear thicker than standard model II speakers.
I must warn you upfront that these are the heaviest speakers we've seen in this size. Might have something to do with the fact they chose granite to dampen the sides of the cabinet :-).
There are two areas we've found these speakers to shine. First is the bass... wow, how can a box this size produce such thunderous and tight bass, especially in a sealed cabinet. You would never know it by looking, but there are two 12" woofers in each cabinet. The second woofer is setup in an isobaric configuration, which is a fancy way of saying it's in a sealed cabinet just behind the visible woofer. This doubles the driver area, while maintaining the same front cabinet size, as it would take a much much larger cabinet to accommodate two 12" woofers. Second, the midrange is as silky smooth as we have ever heard. Must have something to do with the double magnet 6" midrange drivers, again in an unusual configuration.
This speaker was so successful that they are now on their 3rd iteration, now costing $25k.
Condition is wonderful, without any significant scratches or scuffs. Just the usual marks from moving around and positioning. Includes the magnetic grills.
This is how Stereophile summarized their Class A review:
I suppose that if you have a listening room of kingly dimensions or an unquenchable thirst for the very biggest sound and bass down to 12Hz, you might need more speaker than the Andra II. After all, EgglestonWorks doesn't make the Savoy and Ivy Reference for the sheer fun of it. But the Andra offered everything (and then some) that I, for one, could ask of any speaker costing less than a mid-sized Mercedes: enormous dynamic range, superb deep bass, impeccable transparency, and a timbral balance as uncolored and harmonically true as the state of the art permits. It spoke to head and heart in equal measure, and did absolutely anything asked of it with no hint of strain or complaint.
For most of my audio life I have lived with large planar speakers, convinced that no dynamic design could offer the coherence and continuousness of panels. The Andra II has at last convinced me that cones and domes in a box, albeit very special cones and domes in a most extraordinary box, can hold the higher cards. While $19,000 is a hell of a lot of money for a pair of speakers, the Andras have to be considered an eminently fair deal given their superb build quality and extraordinary sound.
Pure Class A in every respect, and a more than worthy successor to the storied original Andra, the Andra II is one of the world's great loudspeakers. It proves that, like love, a speaker, too, can be lovelier the second time around.
