Verdict
Denon has gone to great pains to ensure anyone buying its £2300 AV receiver isn’t left wanting when it comes to the latest film and music playback technologies.

But extensive features aside, what really impresses us is how articulate, rhythmically precise and musical this AV receiver sounds. It’s punchy enough and fully exciting, but we love how it gives importance to the subtler aspects of sound quality.

A terrific performer, this Denon AVR-X6400H would be a worthy addition to virtually anyone's home cinema room.

If it's been a while since your last home theater receiver purchase, we think you'll be impressed with Denon's AVR-X6400H. With 11 amplifier channels, this high-performance home theater machine gives you super-flexible surround sound and multi-room music and video options.

This receiver passes 4K sources, including those encoded with HDR information to your 4K TV, and it even upscales HD and standard definition video to 4K resolution. Stream music from different sources and enjoy high-resolution music in your living room — or any room of your house — thanks to built-in HEOS technology.

Multi-zone music and video
The 'X6400H's 11-channel amplifier gives you extra flexibility to expand your system into other rooms of your house, and/or set up an immersive Dolby Atmos or DTS:X surround sound system. In your living room, you can have up to a nine-channel surround sound system, or 7.1.2-channel Atmos system, and you'll still have two leftover amplifier channels you can reassign to power a set of speakers outdoors or in another room.

If you're happy using fewer channels in your home theater, this receiver can power speakers in two additional zones. Or the extra height channels can be used to bi-amp a pair of compatible front speakers for more powerful sound. A "Zone 2" HDMI output lets you watch video from two separate sources in your living room and a second room.

The SkyFi Testing Process for Receivers:

We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure there are no signs of stress or aging. Capacitors are checked for telltale sings of bulging or leaking, resistors are checked for signs of overheating or cracking, and transistors are checked for signs of stress or damage.

We then power up the unit carefully and run a simple 1k sine wave while monitoring the output on an oscilloscope for signs of distortion or noise. Finally, we run the receiver to its full rated power into the appropriate resistive load provided by our Sencore amplifier tester. If there is an issue, it will usually be noticeable at this point. If everything reads clean, we will often test for THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) measured by our Keithley distortion meter, and compare it against the original manufacturers specifications. The receiver then remains powered on to "burn in" on our test bench for a few hours to make sure there are no heat related issues. If there are balanced inputs available they will be also be tested.

Final testing involves pushing actual music thorough the receiver. We've learned over time that some issues are only noticeable to a trained ear while listening to familiar source material. Our test bench has reference vintage KEF speakers that we're very familiar with which quickly reveal any discrepancies. Some receivers will then move into our listening room where they are tested with our in-house reference speakers of choice.
