General:
The Pro-Ject Xtension 10 Evolution  is a beautifully crafted turntable from Austrian manufacturer Pro-Ject. This particular 'table features the stunning mahogany finish - arguably the most attractive option offered for this model.

Mounted on its one-piece carbon-fiber tonearm is a brand-new Ortofon X40 MC (Moving-Coil) phono cartridge ($1,149 value). It will be professionally calibrated in-house using our 12 Step Premium Turntable/Cartridge Calibration process ($390).

Also included with the turntable is the power supply, two counterweights, dust cover, and the record weight. This will ship in its original wood/MDF "Crate" via truck freight to ensure safe travels to your home.

Great review from Mr. Fremer: "The Pro-Ject Xtension10 Turntable— More Than a "Lifestyle" Product!"

"The Pro-Ject Xtension 10 gives you a suspended mass-loaded turntable featuring a well-damped, attractive gloss-finished veneer plinth in a choice of three woods, a 12.5 pound alloy platter, a nicely done ceramic ball topped bearing, a built in quartz synthesized speed controller driving an A.C. synchronous motor, a 10” carbon fiber arm set in a high mass bearing housing featuring ABEC7 bearings and a dust cover. A good deal in my book."

SkyFi Cosmetic Notes:
Some minor wear near the hinge supports. The dust cover also has some very light scratches. Overall the condition is good.

Shipping:
This Pro-Ject turntable will ship via truck freight anywhere within the lower 48 US States for a flat $350 which includes full insurance. This freight charge will be automatically added during checkout.

More from Pro-Ject:
The Xtension 10 shares much with its larger brother the Xtension 12. Designed to be smaller and with a 10″ tonearm, the Xtension 10 delivers nearly all of the 12’s performance in a more compact and less expensive package. Pro-Ject’s Xtension 10 incorporates over 20 years of experience in turntable design and manufacture.

The Xtension 10 represents the latest technological efforts to address mass-decoupling and resonance reduction. Beginning with the mass-loaded magnetically floated sub-chassis and the precision balanced sandwich alloy platter (recycled vinyl/alloy), the foundation of this system weighs in at a super-heavy 48 lbs.

Additionally, Pro-Ject employs magnetic decoupling feet to thwart airborne or mechanical vibration from disturbing playback. This mass and isolation creates an environment of extremely low resonance, allowing music to emerge from an ultra-silent black background. An AC motor with a two-step pulley drive with electronic speed control maintains perfect pitch and rhythm, resulting in inaudible wow, flutter and noise.

Further reducing noise and vibration is the isolated Sorbothane mounting board for the 10″ carbon-fiber tonearm. The conical arm and unified headshell are fabricated from a single piece of carbon fiber to avoid problems associated with standing wave reflections. Single screw fixing of the armtube allows easy rotation for adjustment of needle azimuth.

Testing Process:
First we try to identify any mechanical issues, particularly in the tonearm bearings. We check for freedom of movement or any resistance on both the horizontal and vertical range. There is a quick test for this which involves placing the table on its front edge and allowing the arm to swing freely like a pendulum. We then make any adjustments necessary to achieve minimal resistance and sometimes adjust the bearing pressure. On gimbal tonearms we inspect the cone tip with a magnifier.

We then assess the platter speed using one of several methods, the most accurate being playing a test tone on a test record and measuring the frequency output with a frequency counter or oscilloscope. We also utilize test equipment to measure the wow and flutter to ensure it is within spec. We do this for all speeds available for that particular model (33 RPM, 45 RPM, 78 RPM).

Adjustments are then made to achieve proper speed which will vary depending on the turntable's drive design. Some require an adjustment of an internal or external potentiometer, some will require a pulley or motor adjustment. We also inspect the platter bearing to ensure it is properly lubricated, keeping in mind that some bearings don't require lubrication at all

We then inspect the power supply and address any issues with overworked capacitors, particularly on Linn and later Thorens machines which tend to need attention.

On fully mechanical vintage tables like the Thorens TD-124 and Garrard 301/401 we will go thought the entire mechanism. Then replace any worn parts and lubricate all components necessary to ensure smooth operation, speed change, and low mechanical noise.

When fitting a new phono cartridge we will go through our detailed calibration process which can involve as many as 12 steps depending on the tonearm design. We perform this work on our custom turntable calibration rig which was developed in-house.

Some of these steps include:
• Pivot to Spindle Adjustment
• Tracking Force
• Anti-Skate
• Tonearm Height
• Lifter Height
• VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle)
• Azimuth
• Stylus Distance and Overhang

We then do a critical listening test using our test records and our test system to ensure proper sonics.
