General:
The Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital is one of our favorite DACs at this price point, and for good reason. Not only is it an excellent standalone DAC, but it also doubles as a preamplifier and headphone amplifier, making it an incredibly versatile little unit. Especially for a desktop audio setup.
Designed by renowned audio engineer John Westlake who was also behind several acclaimed products from Quad and Cambridge Audio, the Pre Box S2 Digital packs some serious technology into a remarkably compact package.
Some of our favorite features include its crisp OLED display, solid all-metal construction, dual-mono design featuring two ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M DAC chips, and convenient remote control (included).
It also offers several selectable digital filter settings, allowing you to fine-tune the sound to your liking. And for those looking to get the most from their digital music collection, the USB input supports both DSD and MQA playback.
There's very little at this price point that offers this combination of sound quality, features, and build quality. And it's made in Europe!
Best of all, this particular Pre Box S2 Digital is brand new, New Old Stock (NOS), and has never been used. It shows absolutely no signs of wear and includes everything originally supplied from the factory. A fantastic opportunity to pick up one of our favorite compact DACs in brand-new condition.
Please note: This is the original Pre Box S2 Digital, the predecessor to the current Pre Box S2 Digital Edition 23, which retails for $500.
From Pro-Ject:
This little desktop DAC is capable of high resolution audio up to 32bit 768kHz PCM and DSD512! Pre Box S2 Digital is also supports hardware MQA unfolding.
With organic polymer capacitors and thin film miniMELF resistors we were able to create a tiny device that will blow away even much bigger components for a much higher price.

Testing Process:
We start with a test signal to verify signal lock and proper output on both channels. If the DAC has balanced outputs these are also tested at this time. If the DAC has multiple Optical and Coaxial inputs they are all checked for proper lock. USB inputs are tested with a MacBook Pro.
After proper function is verified, we setup the DAC for a listening test to evaluate general audio reproduction quality and monitor for clicks, pops, or any other audible signs of issues related to dropped signal lock or failing audio output stages. We often connect the DAC under evaluation to our long term test rig for a long test stint to verify stability under real world operating conditions.
