General:

If you're looking to add a network streamer/DAC to your vintage or modern system, this is one of most feature-packed and well-built models from Marantz (or others) anywhere in this price range.

This was Marantz's first streamer/DAC from their reference line of components. You can tell a lot of thought went into not only features, but also the design and build.

Weighing in at 32+ lbs, balanced and unbalanced analog outputs, an easy to use built-in GUI with a remote that has just the right amount of functionally, Marantz toroidal power transformer, a copper plated chassis, etc. The list goes on and on!

Tested in our shop as a standalone DAC and for pulling music from our shop NAS media server. Working in every respect and also updated to the latest available Marantz software/firmware release.

This NA-11S1 is in very good condition but the display has a slight smudge on the edge. Not something you notice from normal viewing distance (please see our photos).

Standout Marantz Features Include:
• Apple AirPlay
• 24-bit/192kHz audiophile digital-to-analog converters
• WMA, MP3, MPEG-4, AAC, WAV, ALAC (Apple Lossless) and FLAC files
• High-resolution digital music files from computers and USB storage devices (up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution)
• Asynchronous USB input for sonically pure computer audio
• Native DSD playback through rear-panel USB Type B port with compatible computer and receiver
• High-precision dual master clock with jitter reduction
• High current toroidal power transformer with copper-plated case
• Rigid copper-plated chassis with dual-layered bottom plate and aluminum die-cast feet

Best Product 'Digital Audio Player' - EISA Award
"If networked audio systems have typically been designed for convenience rather than ultimate sound quality then this new digital audio player from Marantz marks a turning point in the evolution of home hi-fi. In addition to offering USB Type A and B sockets – for iDevices, memory sticks and connection to a PC or Mac – the NA-11S1 includes an Ethernet port for access to a NAS drive or to become part of your wired home network.

The new DSD-over-USB protocol is also supported. Naturally, AirPlay and DLNA connectivity is included, so you can wirelessly stream music from your computer or mobile device. The player is immaculately finished while its subtle, smooth and intricately detailed sound is always musical, setting an enviable standard. Without doubt, the NA-11S1 is a supreme streamer."

More from Marantz:
The NA-11S1 Premium Network Audio player is arguably the most advanced, next-generation player there has ever been.

Its introduction to this year’s Premium collection is a true milestone in the Marantz history and is a momentous occasion for every audiophile. Why? Because finally, it is now possible to enjoy new media on the highest of levels, by utilizing the increasingly available high resolution downloads it creates ‘studio master’ quality right in your own living room.

It produces such breath-taking audio quality because inside it includes the High Current Audiophile D/A converter DSD1792 as well as a Marantz original DSP and Digital Filter PEC777- a high-end algorithm previously used only in professional recording studios - we call it Marantz Musical Mastering. This type of filtering retains greater detail for an even wider sound stage and a perfect balance.

Its analogue audio circuits feature Marantz HDAM®-SA2 and HDAM®, and the Toroidal transformer ensures that there’s always power in store the instant it’s needed, while the rigid copper-plated chassis with 5mm thick aluminum top cover minimize vibration and interference. Importantly, selectable digital filters allow you to tune the sound as you prefer.

The USB-B port works in asynchronous mode and supports not only 192kHz / 24bits but also the DSD 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz for maximized versatility.

You can play FLAC HD 192/24 files, WAV 192/24 files, Internet Radio and Streaming Services support via Ethernet, and AirPlay Music Streaming from iTunes or iDevices – as well as many other file types.

It is also DLNA 1.5 certified, so Android integration is easy, and the USB-A port on the front panel also makes playback from an iPod/iPhone/iPad or USB devices just as simple.

This player has the lot. What more could you dream of?

DAC Mode
With the DAC mode we describe the operation of the product as an external Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC). You can connect via optical / coaxial digital inputs or the USB type B input sources such as such as an external CD drive, digital tape, music server, PC or network client. These sources can make use of the high quality D/A converter and the analogue output stage equipped with HDAM modules to enrich the sound quality. Please check USB Type B describtion as well.

DLNA
DLNA certified products guarantee a stable and fast connection, cross-brand interoperatebility, Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), automatic IP-addressing and easy to use in a wired or wireless setup with your home network: Sharing of your favourite music, photo’s and video’s stored on your PC, NAS-drive, Musicserver or HD recorder through your audio/ video set-up is possible.

HDAM SA2
Marantz developed its own discrete circuit boards to replace standard IC's. These HDAM's consists of discrete surface mount components with short mirror image L/R signal paths. Those devices are doing exactly the same thing as the Op-Amps, but outperform the regular IC Op-amps dramatically in terms of the Slew Rate and reduced noise level, resulting in a much more dynamic, accurate and detailed sound. Over the years Marantz developed different types of the HDAM to improve quality and to fit to the special requirements of a product category like CD or amplifier.

Marantz Musical Mastering
In 2004, the original SA-11S1 was the first ever SACD player to offer selectable digital filter algorithms. These were developed by Marantz to improve CD audio quality significantly. In 2012 the SA-11S3 and in 2013, the NA-11S1 continues this pioneering role with the advanced selectable digital filtering technologies that were previously available only in professional recording studios. As these digital filters are all about music, we call this technology Marantz Musical Mastering.

There are two filter characteristics to cater for different tastes, and each handles even the minutest of detail with loving care in the digital audio signal . Making standard counted sound as incredible as high-resolution audio, and transforming new media files into the finest of high-resolution playback.

No compromises are made here. As today’s new media not only comes in 44.1kHz/16 bit resolution – similar to the CD format, Marantz also developed the digital filters to handle signals of up to 192kHz/24bit resolution. Enabling it to make the most of high-resolution files and reproducing music with stunning clarity.

This is supported by a superior DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) for the purest possible conversion of the digital signal processed by Marantz Musical Mastering.

PC Audio streaming
Digital media stored on a computer or NAS (network access storage - network hard disc drive) is becoming more and more popular. But listening to the music only "on the go" via your portable media player or sitting in front of a PC is not a must anymore. With our products supporting audio streaming you can enjoy the music via the HiFi system in a high-quality, and while sitting on your couch.

The SkyFi Testing Process for DACs:

We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure that there are no signs of heat stress or damage. Capacitors are checked for telltale signs of predictive failure including bulging, shrunken wrappers, or physical leakage. We also inspect resistors and other passive components for signs of overheating.

After the visual inspection we connect the DAC’s RCA outputs to our Sencore PA81 Power Analyzer which simulates a real world input impedance and allows us to monitor the output on an oscilloscope. We are equipped to test optical, coaxial, and USB inputs at Redbook CD Quality. We start with a test signal to verify signal lock and proper output on both channels. If the DAC has balanced outputs these are also tested at this time. If the DAC has multiple Optical and Coaxial inputs they are all checked for proper lock. USB inputs are tested with a Macbook Pro.

After proper function is verified, we set the DAC up for a listening test to evaluate general audio reproduction quality and monitor for clicks, pops, or any other audible signs of issues related to dropped signal lock or failing audio output stages. We often connect DACs under evaluation to our long term test rig for a long test stint to verify stability under real world operating conditions.
