Ben’s fascination with electronics began early on. As a child growing up in central Wisconsin, he was often scolded by his parents for bringing home large quantities of “electronic junk” which had been scavenged from the curbs of unsuspecting neighbors. He spent hours dissembling, tinkering, and experimenting, always curious about how these devices worked. Eventually his focus began to shift towards his other passion, music.
After high school, Ben went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. It was during his college years that he put together his first used separates system and caught the HiFi bug. To earn extra money during school, Ben began buying and selling items on eBay and Craigslist, focusing on the things that he knew best, vintage stereo electronics and guitars. Out of necessity, he cultivated the skills to diagnose and repair most of the common issues found in these pieces, developing a deep respect for the craftsmanship and beauty of vintage Japanese and American made receivers and amplifiers.
In 2013, Ben was transplanted to the east coast where he began a career in the home automation industry. During this time, he expanded his electrical knowledge to include tube circuits and continues to study electrical engineering principles.
To date, Ben has repaired, restored, sold, and shipped hundreds of pieces of audio equipment from a wide range of manufacturers and eras and brings over 10 years of online sales experience to the SkyFi team.
