This exact unit was the centerpiece of my main system for many years before I eventually upgraded to the flagship two-piece C1100.

While the C1100 is a formidable tube preamp, and quite possibly the best-measuring preamplifier we've ever tested, the C2500 comes surprisingly close. One feature I still miss from the C2500 is the convenience of its built-in DAC, which McIntosh eliminated with the C1100.

The C2500 is also a gorgeous piece of equipment featuring McIntosh's signature illuminated glass front panel, a beautifully polished stainless steel chassis, and a glass viewing window on top that lets you admire the glowing tubes inside.

It's also incredibly versatile, with a built-in DAC for digital sources and an excellent tube-based phono section supporting both moving-magnet (MM) and moving-coil (MC) cartridges. Even demanding low-output MC cartridges can be accommodated without the need for an external phono preamp.

This particular C2500 performed beautifully during our testing and sounded every bit as good as I remember.

If you're considering the current McIntosh C2800 which retails for $10,500, but would prefer to save a substantial amount without sacrificing much in the way of performance or features, the C2500 is a fantastic alternative.

Included with this preamplifier are its original McIntosh remote control (along with a brand-new replacement, as the original remotes tend to become sticky over time), owner's manual, and factory shipping box.

*Note that the new remote control does not have a selection to switch to phono. This must be done at the front input selector (or old remote) Otherwise the new remote functions normally.

SkyFi Cosmetic Notes:
Extremely light signs of wear. All eight Inputs on the C2500 can be matched in level, so there are no abrupt changes in volume levels between the different Inputs.

• Moving Coil and Moving Magnet Phono Inputs
The C2500 contains two different precision Phono Preamplifier Circuits. One for low output Moving Coil Phono Cartridges with selectable resistance loading, the other is for Moving Magnet Cartridges with select- able capacitive loading. Both circuits use the latest designs to provide the lowest possible noise and dis- tortion. The RIAA Correction Equalization Circuitry utilizes close tolerance resistors and capacitors for an extremely flat frequency response.

• Digital Audio Inputs
The C2500 has Coaxial, Optical and USB Digital In- puts to Decode PCM Signals from an external source. The C2500 Up Samples the Digital Signal to 192kHz with 32Bit resolution before the Digital to Analog process begins.

• Balanced Inputs
The Balanced Inputs allow the connection of a source component using long cable lengths without a loss in sound quality.

• Precision Tracking Volume Control
Volume levels are controlled by a new Multi-Stage Precision Digitally Controlled Attenuator System with superb tracking accuracy.

• Variable Rate Volume and Balance Controls
The C2500 Tube Preamplifier’s Volume and Balance Control Circuitry provides an ideal rate of change with control rotation.

• Remote Control with External Sensor Input
The Remote Control provides control of the C2500 operating functions and McIntosh Source Components connected to it. Enjoy your McIntosh System from another room in your home by connecting an external sensor.

• Special Power Supply
Fully regulated Power Supplies and a special R-Core Power Transformer ensure stable noise free operation even though the power line varies.

SkyFi Technical Notes:
The original remote for this unit has become sticky. Capacitors are checked for telltale signs of predictive failure including bulging, shrunken wrappers, or physical leakage. We also inspect the PCBs for discoloration from resistors or transistors that may have been running hot. On vintage units we often spot check select capacitors for value and ESR.

When we first power on a preamplifier we connect its RCA output to a Sencore PA81 Power Analyzer which simulates real world loading conditions and gives us an oscilloscope interface.

The first order of business is checking that the volume control works smoothly throughout its entire range with acceptable channel balance. This is accomplished by feeding a 1 KHz sine wave into one of the preamp’s line level inputs while monitoring the preamp’s output on an oscilloscope.

We then switch to a 1 KHz square wave to test the tone controls, loudness function, and filters where applicable. During this step we are watching for equal alteration of the test signal by both channels. This also helps us identify dirty controls that will need treatment.

Once the basic line stage functions are verified, we test each input individually. This is especially important for devices that use relays to select their sources. If the preamp is equipped with a phono stage we test that as well. We use an inverse RIAA filter which allows us to feed a reference test signal into the phono input with the proper RIAA equalization and level. A square wave or sine sweep is used to verify that the device’s phono stage is faithfully reproducing the RIAA curve. If the preamp under test has balanced inputs and/or outputs these are tested as well.

We finish up our bench testing with a listening test with our bench amplifier and reference speakers. During this test we check for hum or hiss that may not have shown up in earlier testing. We also check that all of the tone controls and filters perform as expected.

If the preamplifier has remote control functions these are also tested. Preamps with tube circuits or complicated power supply topologies are connected at our long term test rig for extended stress testing under real world conditions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0003/3275/9084/files/mcintosh-c2500-tube-preamplifier-w-new-remote-719.jpg?v=1793723718
